Vertical Jump and Explosiveness: How to Jump Higher
How to increase your vertical jump by combining strength, plyometrics and rate of force development, with concrete drills and a sample week.

My name is Armin, and I work as a strength and conditioning coach in Bugojno and online across the region. As a former footballer who now prepares athletes, I get the same question all the time: how do I jump higher. Basketball players, volleyball players and footballers who want a better jump for headers all ask the same thing, yet they rarely train the right thing. Here is how I do it.
The short answer
Your vertical jump grows from two things that have to go together: stronger legs and faster force. A strong leg produces force, and how fast you produce that force decides how quickly it lifts you off the floor. So you build the jump with both strength work in the gym and plyometrics for explosiveness, not by jumping every day.
What actually decides jump height
The jump is not only about how strong you are. Two players can squat the same weight, and one jumps ten centimeters higher. The difference is how fast they express that strength. That speed is called rate of force development, and in plain terms it is how much force you can deliver in the tenth of a second the takeoff lasts.
When I work with someone on jumping, I look at three things: how strong the leg is, how fast they express that strength, and how well they use the elastic bounce of tendons and muscles on landing and takeoff. All three are trained differently.
Pillar one: strength as the foundation
Without strength you have nothing to accelerate. So I first build a strong base in the gym, with proven lifts.
- Squat. The king of leg strength. We do it clean, full range, with heavier load and low reps.
- Deadlift and Romanian deadlift. Build the hamstrings and glutes, which supply a big part of the takeoff.
- Bulgarian split squat and lunges. Single-leg work, because in sport you most often take off from one leg.
- Calf raises. Strong calves and feet pass force into the floor instead of soaking it up.
The goal here is not fatigue but strong, quality reps with enough rest. Strength is the roof, everything else is built on it.
Pillar two: plyometrics and rate of force development
Strength on its own is slow. Plyometrics is the bridge that turns that strength into a fast takeoff. Here the body learns to deliver force as fast as it can.
- Box jump. Teaches you to explode upward with a soft landing, easy on the knees.
- Depth jump. You drop from a lower box and immediately rebound, teaching the body to redirect force fast.
- Standing broad jump and repeated jumps. Build elasticity and the rebound network.
- Hurdle hops. Short ground contact, maximal takeoff speed.
Plyometrics is done in small amounts and with full rest. Small dose, maximal quality. Fifty tired jumps teach you to jump slowly, ten fresh ones teach you to jump explosively.
The biggest mistake: jumping on tired legs
The jump is a skill of explosiveness, and explosiveness is only trained fresh. The worst thing you can do is hammer jumps at the end of a session when your legs are dead. That drills a slow movement and raises injury risk.
That is why I always put jumps and explosive work at the very start of a session, after the warm-up, when the body is freshest. Strength and heavy lifting can come after, because they do not need maximal speed.
How to lay out a week for a better jump
Here is how I usually lay out a week when the goal is the vertical jump.
- Day 1. Plyometrics fresh, then lower body strength.
- Day 2. Lighter explosive work, short sprints and jumps, plus upper body.
- Day 3. Lower body strength with a focus on single-leg work and the posterior chain.
- The rest. Mobility, landings and light recovery, so the body is ready for the next quality day.
Results do not come in a week. Realistically, in eight to twelve weeks of consistent work you see a visible jump upward, as long as you do not skip strength and do not overdo the volume.
